The most expensive car in the world: 135 million euros for the Mercedes 300 SLR
It’s official: Mercedes is the most expensive car in the world. On May 5, 2022, the legendary “Uhlenhaut Coupé”, a Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR, is auctioned in Mercedes’ name. Price: 135 million euros! Mercedes boss Ola Källenius confirmed the deal to the business portal “Bloomberg” on 18 May.
Useful for classic car fans
This makes the car three times more expensive than the previous record holder, the 1963 Ferrari 250 GTO, which changed hands a few years ago for over 40 million euros. The Super Mercedes now costs about the same as Andy Warhol’s recent painting at auction.
Secret auction in Stuttgart
All auction details are strictly confidential. Only the price of 135 million euros is now known. About a dozen collector’s picks and the super-rich were flown in, some by private jet. The deal took place on May 5 at the Mercedes Museum in Stuttgart.
Mercedes racing director Rudolf Uhlenhaut (1906-1989) used the speedster as his personal company car for many years.
Buyer? Also keep it a secret. Rumor has it that it was a huge blow to the British auto industry – but this is unconfirmed. Mercedes was silent, as was the auction house involved.
How can a car be so expensive? There are only two. The only difference between the two is the interior colors: red and blue. The Mercedes gullwing 300 SL, closely related to the Uhlenhaut SLR, is one of the most coveted collectors’ items, and the specimen in perfect condition is priced at 1.4 million euros.
The Uhlenhaut Coupe is built specifically for racing. It was faster and louder than the 300 SL.
But the “Uhlenhaut-Coupé” has not six in-line cylinders under the hood, but eight in-line cylinders! The fact that a rare special version of the Uhlenhaut sells for almost a hundred times the price of a gullwing is sensational in itself.
Källenius: “Mercedes is now on another planet”
Mercedes boss Ola Källenius told Bloomberg he was very pleased with the results, saying they were “on a different planet” compared to Ferrari. In addition to a sensation in the world of collectors, Mercedes also wants to set an example in the world of motorsport. Ferrari’s morale is likely to drop as a result of this big deal.
In the future, millions of Uhlenhaut will finance educational grants for youth and the financially disadvantaged.
Mercedes, however, has planned auctions of millions: This is the start-up capital of a “Mercedes-Benz fund”, as Mercedes board member Renata Jungo Brüngger – who is responsible for corporate culture – told Bloomberg.
The Stuttgart-based company wants to enable worldwide educational grants. The focus is on the environment and sustainability and is aimed at financially disadvantaged youth.
Top speed then amazing
When the car was made in 1956, it was one of the absolute super sports cars of its time and had a top speed of 286 km/h – stunning for the time.

The SLR 300 specifically got its name because Rudolf Uhlenhaut, then head of the racing department, used a sports car as the company’s car.
The coupe was originally intended for use in auto racing, but after the 1955 season Mercedes withdrew from racing for many years.
