BMW even officially teased the new M2 and provided its own landing page. In addition to the optical preview, the site also provides an indication of the motorization of the compact sports car. How To Cars shows what is known about the M2!

Engine: 490 hp possible in the new M2

One thing is for sure: the new BMW M2 will be back with a guaranteed driving pleasure! Since the old M2 Competition already got 410 hp from the S55 straight-six, its successor had to add a few more hp.

This is how AUTO BILD illustrators envision the new generation of BMW M2.

So far it’s been said that the M2 will run in honor of the big brethren with a maximum of 450 hp. However, BMW has provided initial consumption on its official website for the M2. At 10 liters per 100 km, the high-performance Series 2 is very close to its current sibling. Because of this, Munich could give the M2 more power than expected.

A certain distance to the competition model (510 hp) will definitely remain. However, a maximum of 490 hp seems realistic with the consumption data already published.

All-wheel drive, as offered as an option for the M3 and M4, also doesn’t appear to be available. As an xDrive, the lighter M2 will push its sibling to the parade and steal market share.
It’s entirely possible that the M-DKG transmission has had its time and BMW is using the famous ZF eight-speed automatic transmission for the new M2 instead. But don’t worry: for purists, the manual transmission will probably stay within the standard range.

Design: BMW M2 with flared fenders and four original exhausts

BMW has published its own spy shot as a teaser. Despite the strong camouflage, the proportions of the classic coupé – long hood, short tail – are clearly recognizable. As befits a true M model, the M2’s fenders are wide, like its predecessors the legendary M2 F87 and 1 Series M Coupé.

At the rear, the top model can be recognized by the four-pipe exhaust. The fact that there are four original exhausts and no fake covers is a matter of honor for the M2.

BMW M2 Prototype

A very important question is: which kidney will BMW choose for the M2?

Things get interesting ahead. It is very secretive on Erlkönig, that there is no reliable statement as to whether the M2 might be launched with the M3/M4 front style.

The much-discussed “beaver kidney” is meant to differentiate the M version more from the normal model. However, the “normal” BMW 2 Series Coupé G42 is against this. The original model had relatively wide kidneys, but unlike the 4 it wasn’t that tall. As far as the M2 is concerned, this certainly sparked the hopes of the big M kidney critics.

The M2 sticks with the classic exhaust system, but M Performance Parts are also available as an option.

BMW M has also provided a glimpse of M Performance Parts. As it turns out, the top 2 could also be equipped with a spoiler at the rear and colored rims in the future. The disguised prototype also shows the familiar performance exhaust systems of the M3 and M4, which arrange the exhaust pipes at an angle and one above the other.

Price: The new BMW M2 will be more expensive than its predecessor

When the new BMW M2 hits dealerships starting in the fall of 2022, it will probably cost a bit more than its predecessor. The final 410 hp M2 competition is available from around 62,500 euros. The upcoming M2 will probably cost under 65,000 euros.
