Peugeot 208 GTi Facelift (2015): Used car test

Peugeot 208 GTi Facelift (2015): Used car test

A lot happens in a small runabout class of around 200 hp. Hyundai i20 N just revived the league, Ford Fiesta ST and VW Polo GTI overcame this with fresh facelifts. Unfortunately, you don’t hear anything from Peugeot anymore. The brand’s focus is clearly on electric mobility – and no longer on the sporty combustion engine. That leaves the Peugeot 208 GTi second hand.
Two years ago we brought France here as a young used car – with mixed feelings at the time. Very pleasant driving behavior, but in detail some weak points. Now let’s see what’s new after the facelift 208 GTi have done. Basically, there is unlimited potential in lightweight platforms.

separated 208 GTi still the fastest small car on our Sachsenring hit list. With 1:41.17 minutes in 2018, he even beat the new one i20 N almost a second. Exactly 98 percent. Before the faceliftParty lost 1.3 seconds, from Polo Don’t talk, even at the more powerful 53 hp and all-wheel drive Toyota GR Yaris he only lost half a second.

Used Peugeot 208 GTi: Facelift models available from around 13,000 euros

Even then it was a sensational performance – and above all, an ongoing one. In our tests, of course, the sharpened “by” peugeot Sport” with Brembo stoppers, Torsen locks, wider tracks and a chassis that was ten millimeters lower. At that time, it cost 4190 euros more than the usual. GTi and even recently remained well below the 30,000 mark at 28,810 euros. Today the market situation is very complex: pre-facelifted models with six-figure mileage are already around 9,000 euros, and revised ones 208 want to pay at least 13,000 euros. By then most of the bidding had run for about 60,000 kilometers.

The 208 GTi by Peugeot Sport is rarely available. If you find one: grab it!

Our test car from peugeotThe Bebion dealer in Magstadt near Stuttgart is priced at 16,980 euros, but only has a distance of 35,000 kilometers. When he has it GTi When it comes to the yard, said seller Alexander Knieling, it usually sells right away. Our photo car in matte silk Ice Silver has found a new home with a curve-hungry owner. Incidentally, striking textured paints are available for facelifts at very competitive prices. At the time, the matt look only cost 180 euros more than conventional metallic paint.

We wondered at the time if the cheap finish would last for years. After all, matt paint was originally thought to be a lot like a diva. But: Even after three and a half years, her outer skin looks almost perfect. But the chrome look on the rear bumper with some unpleasant efflorescences. The 17-inch wheel is called Carbone and is grayed out here.

Enjoy every trip, no matter how short

The first signs of rust can also be found on the exhaust, but dealers assure us the material is strong enough. Nothing happened there. Before the exhaust system has to be replaced, the brackets tend to come loose – not very desirable either. Anyway, it’s time to go. Lock loop next to it Mini-Volant – and the 1.6 liter growled hoarsely to himself. The shift key just stands out, feels really good in the hand. The bulge on the front makes it easy to grip. The six-speed box still switches cleanly, but the roads are a bit springy. But that’s also the case with factory test cars with four-figure mileage.

Used Peugeot 208 GTi in test

On country roads, we were blown away by the powerful voice and highly communicative chassis of the dashing French man. Others call it “wavy” or “toned,” but it has far too negative connotations for us. “Hands-tight” is probably the best way to describe it – and that makes it the perfect match for direct-feedback steering wheels with plateau instruments. The innovative setup had to initially receive a lot of criticism, but the problem with it was simply having the driver adjust their backrest too slowly. From Peugeot 208 GTi practically educating you into the correct sitting position – and having fun on even the shortest rides.
