The stylish surfaces, lines and design details of the third generation BMW X1 model make the SUV character more visible than ever. Distinguishing elements include the proportions, the nearly square contours of the wheel arches and the distinctive BMW X styling at the front and rear. The vertical front gives the new X1 a look of its own; The narrow LED headlights, the large, almost square BMW kidney grille, the criss-crossing and side-wide stripes and the striking chrome stripe on the lower air inlets are image-defining elements. Adaptive LED headlights with matrix high beam, variable light distribution and pulsed directional indicators are available as optional equipment.
Key elements of the new interior are the sleek dashboard, BMW Curved Display, ‘floating’ armrests with integrated control panel and the smartphone pad that lights up indirectly on the front of the center console. The optional trailer hitch is now electrically operated at the push of a button.
The Maps navigation system, leather-wrapped sports steering wheel, automatic temperature control and rain sensor with automatic lighting activation are standard equipment, as are four USB-C and two 12-volt connections and more driver assistance systems than in the previous X1 generation.
The iX1 xDrive30 is BMW’s first all-electric all-wheel drive model in the premium compact segment. Two electric motors integrated into the front and rear axles produce a combined power of 230 kW (313 hp, including temporary extra power) and a combined torque of 494 Nm. If desired, the iX1 xDrive30 sprints from rest to 100 km/h in 5.7 seconds.
The fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology has also been used in the plug-in hybrid version of the new X1. This shows progress in terms of sporty performance, efficiency and load capacity. The power range is also much greater than the previous generation.
At launch, the X1 offered a choice of two petrol engines and two diesel engines from the new generation of modular Efficient Dynamics engines from the BMW Group. The second generation 48V Mild Hybrid technology, with an electric motor integrated into the 7-speed Steptronic automatic transmission, is available to increase the efficiency and power delivery of the two most powerful engines. Thus, the X1 xDrive23i in-line 4 cylinder produces a system output of 160 kW (218 hp) – a maximum of 150 kW (204 hp) from the gasoline engine and a maximum of 14 kW (19 hp) from the integrated electric motor. The X1 sDrive18i, also available from launch, is powered by an inline 3-cylinder petrol engine with an output of 100 kW (136 hp). The inline 4 cylinder diesel engine with Mild Hybrid technology in the new X1 xDrive23d produces 155 kW (211 hp) of system power – a maximum of 145 kW (197 hp) from the diesel engine and up to 14 kW (19 hp) from the diesel engine. integrated electric motor. The in-line 4-cylinder diesel engine in the X1 sDrive18d produces 110 kW (150 hp).
Standard equipment includes Cruise Control with braking function and Approach Control Warning. The system now also signals oncoming traffic when turning left and pedestrians and cyclists when turning right. Parking Assistant with reverse camera and Reversal Assistant are also part of standard equipment. The list of optional equipment includes Steering and Lane Control Assistant, Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go function, Head-Up Display, as well as Surround View, Remote 3D View, Drive Recorder and Remote Theft Recorder. The X1 features the latest generation BMW iDrive and Live Cockpit Plus as standard equipment. It is based on Operating System 8 and includes a Curved Screen with advanced graphics and menu structure, and a Smart Personal Assistant with new skills. The fully digital display consists of a 10.25-inch information screen and a Control Screen with a 10.7-inch screen diagonal. Thanks to the digitization of the interior, there are as few physical buttons, switches and other controls as possible.
The new My Mode combines individually selectable settings options for the car with a world of experiences suited to the interior. The Augmented View function is an option for the ‘cloud based’ Maps navigation system. An interior camera makes it possible to take snapshots of the occupants, which can also be sent to the customer’s smartphone if desired.
