This effect is further enhanced by clean intake air ducts and a sharp, flat headlamp unit, which uses LED technology. Despite its compact dimensions, this unit also accommodates a striking L-shape daytime running light. A longer hood, increased wheelbase (+60mm) and track width (front +15mm; rear +50mm) and a lower roof (-10mm) make the Lexus RX more powerful than ever. Its presence is reinforced by 21-inch alloy wheels and rear roof pillars. This one is black. This makes the roof of the car seem to float. The performance of the new RX 500h hybrid catches the eye with the sleek and sporty F SPORT design accents.
Like the New NX and RZ, the New Lexus RX uses the Tazuna cockpit concept. Due to the minimalist design combined with the placement and grouping of instruments and displays (head-up), minimal head movement is sufficient for information. For the first time, Lexus is also offering synthetic leather seats on the RX. In addition to the seats, steering wheel and transmission selector are also covered in this animal-friendly leather.
The length of the luggage compartment has been increased by 50 mm, while the loading threshold has been lowered by 30 mm. The three-section folding rear seat (40/20/40) helps create tailor-made luggage space. Thanks to the e-latch, one button is enough to open the door automatically. The E-Latch is linked to Blind Spot Assist, which ‘sees’ cyclists and other road users approaching from behind. If this happens, the automatic door opening will be stopped immediately.
Like every Lexus, the new RX is designed around the Lexus Driving Signature philosophy, which focuses on a combination of comfort, dynamics and control. The GA-K platform forms the basis for this in the new RX. It is essentially the same as the Lexus NX platform, but the new RX has a longer wheelbase and additional elements that increase structural rigidity.
Thanks to the new platform, the new Lexus RX is 90 kg lighter than its predecessor. For example, he uses a modern type of steel that is very strong and relatively light at the same time. In combination with a lower roof (-10 mm), the new RX’s center of gravity is 15 mm lower than its predecessor. The new multi-link rear suspension contributes to extra stability and reduces the tendency to dive when braking. In addition, it can handle higher tensile forces than before. This suspension also contributes to the reduction of unwanted noise and vibration.
The RX 500h is Lexus’ first hybrid model with a turbo engine. The RX 500h’s powertrain consists of a 2.4-liter turbo engine, which is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. The electric motor (e-axle) placed between the combustion engine and transmission is good for 80 kW). System power is 273 kW / 371 hp and maximum torque of 645 Nm. The DIRECT4 all-wheel drive system distributes driving power variably between the front and rear axles. The Lexus RX 500h accelerates from 0-100 km/h in just 5.9 seconds.
The first RX with plug-in hybrid technology
The new RX 450h+ is expected to be the most popular model in Europe. The first plug-in hybrid variant in the RX lineup features a 2.5-liter hybrid engine and an 18.1 kWh lithium-ion battery. System power is 225 kW / 306 hp and maximum torque of 572 Nm. Acceleration from 0-100 km / h takes 7.0 seconds. The expected average consumption according to WLTP standards is 1.1-1.2 l/100km (CO2: 24-26 g/km). The 18.1 kW battery is expected to provide an electric range of up to 65 km. In EV mode, the top speed is limited to 135 km/h. Thanks to the fourth-generation Lexus hybrid system, the RX 450h+ is relatively efficient with the electric motor turned off.
The new RX 350h owes its efficiency to the fourth generation of Lexus’ hybrid system. The powertrain with a 2.5-liter petrol engine produces 180 kW / 245 hp and 335 Nm of torque. The new RX 350h combines average performance (0-100 km/h in 8.0 seconds) with reasonable consumption figures (6.4-6.6 l/100 km; CO2: 143-150 g/km).
The new multimedia system can also be controlled by voice. This can be activated by saying ‘Hey Lexus’. The system responds to the use of natural language. From now on, Apple and Android phones can be integrated into smartphones. Wireless charging options for smartphones are also available.
With Lexus Link, many functions are available remotely. The car can be found via the app, the doors and tailgate can be locked and unlocked, the tailgate can be opened and the air conditioner can be activated. The app also explains how much fuel is left in the tank. If the RX is in a busy parking lot, finding it is made easier by briefly activating the turn signal. It is also possible to view trip analytics and support applications with hybrid training in realizing the most efficient driving style. Several new functions have been added specifically for the Lexus RX 450h+. For example, the app makes the battery charge status visible and it is also possible to plan and monitor the charging process remotely.
The top version of the new RX lineup is standard equipped with a Mark Levinson Premium Surround Sound system with 21 speakers. This system is made specifically for the interior of the Lexus RX.
Upon request, the new Lexus RX is available with digital rearview mirrors. Maneuvering in confined spaces is greatly facilitated with the Digital Panoramic View Monitor, which allows a 360-degree view of the car’s surroundings. The camera also produces 3D images of the car, so the RX can also be viewed from above in the sky if desired (helicopter view). The camera is cleaned automatically so that it always gives the best picture.
The Advanced Parking System for RX makes parking maneuvers simple(er) as the car automatically performs the necessary steering and braking actions. This system comes from Lexus’ flagship LS. For precision, the system uses cameras and sensors that together create a complete picture of the environment. The Advanced Park System even recognizes up to three frequently used parking lots.
Security
The Pre-Collision system is now also capable of detecting motorcycles and other objects on the RX track. It also recognizes the possible dangers that can arise when turning from approaching traffic or crossing pedestrians. System response times have been reduced and steering intervention from Emergency Steering Assist also contributes to accident prevention.
Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) now recognizes road users gathered in front of the car more quickly. Together with the improved Lane Trace Assist, the ACC ensures that the RX follows a more natural line through corners. ACC recognizes more traffic signs than ever before.
With the Extended Safety Package, the level of security increases. This includes Lane Change Assistance, which performs lane changes automatically. Front Traffic Alert warns of oncoming traffic if necessary.
The Pre-Collision System with Active Steering Assist detects situations where there is a high risk of collision with a pedestrian or object. The system immediately determines whether brake intervention alone is sufficient to prevent a collision. Otherwise, Active Steering Assist also works. The system automatically applies the brakes and signals a warning that steering action is required.
Proactive Driving Assist helps maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front, even when cruise control is not activated. This system also helps in avoiding pedestrians and obstacles.
