Distinctive look, that’s the point. Sports Utility Vehicles were once bought to stand out from the rest. However, the SUV is now the best-selling car, so the variants that appear are able to stand out. The “Premium” brand has been offering SUVs with a coupe roofline for some time now. That trend is now towards volume brands, including Volkswagen.
ID.5 is mostly the same as ID.4. Both cars are on the same platform, have the same wheelbase and share the same technology. The difference is in the appearance. What stands out the most is the roofline. The ID.5 has lines that flow like a coupé, while the ID.4 angles like an off-road vehicle. But there’s more! The front is also drawn a little differently. In addition, details such as the color of the side sills are different to differentiate between the sturdy family car (ID.4) and the more fashionable ID.5.
Since the roofline of the ID.5 is slightly lower than that of the ID.4, the rear seats are slightly lower, so the space at the back remains the same. And that means plenty of head and legroom so four adults can sit comfortably on the ID.5. Although the interior space and decor of ID.4 and ID.5 are the same, a big difference can be made with the equipment. Three cars were driven for this test and the difference in seats and upholstery can create a completely different atmosphere.
The ID.5 luggage compartment measures 549 liters (1,561 liters with rear seats folded). That’s pretty much on par with ID.4 and very good for a car of this size. This above-average space is due to the platform, which has been specially designed for electric propulsion. That’s why ID.5 (like ID.4) offers significantly more interior space than comparable cars with combustion engines.
And with that, the differences between Volkswagen ID.4 and ID.5 are covered! Equipment, drives and all technology are identical. However, ID.5 is the first to use Volkswagen’s latest software. At the time of writing this is version 3.0. However, the new software will soon be available on all other ID models.
“ID.5 is all about looks and since Volkswagen is so good in shape, it can now offer this extra tasty variant too”
Volkswagen is still very stubborn about only placing a small screen on the steering column, which is easy to read thanks to a very logical layout. In addition, ID.5 has a heads-up display. As usual with heads-up displays, it shows data in the driver’s field of view. However, Volkswagen went a step further by displaying it in the right place in the landscape, so that, for example, the arrows from the navigation system appeared to hover around corners. With this approach, Volkswagen is not unique, but is an exception in the volume brand.
With most brands, the coué SUV has sportier handling than its original standard SUV. At first, it looked like Volkswagen had only done half the job by placing the ID.5 on the exact same chassis as the ID.4. However: both models are available as “GTX” and it is a sporty version that does offer different handling thanks to the modified chassis.
The standard ID.5 has a benevolent character. Thanks to the raised edge of the hood, the body is easily visible and the driver finds the car big and wide. The battery on the floor provides a low, center of gravity, keeping the ID.5 stable and quickly regaining balance after smoothly controlled bends. Volkswagen does not opt for hard or soft chassis and indirect or indirect steering. Compromises are always found, so the car is easy and relaxed to drive.
When choosing the GTX, a sporty tone is added. The GTX is definitely not as sporty a car as the Volkswagen GTI, but thanks to a slightly different chassis tuning, the driver has a bit more of a feel with the mechanics. The steering is a bit more direct, making the car respond faster to commands and appear even smaller and lighter.
At the time of writing, the ID.5 has always been equipped with a 77 kWh battery, but there is a choice between a 174 hp, 204 hp, or 299 hp electric motor. The 204 hp version only drives the rear wheels and is smooth, powerful, smooth and very quiet. Electric cars are naturally quieter than cars with combustion engines, but the ID.5 is even quieter than the average electric SUV thanks to good aerodynamics and good sound insulation.
On an easy route (back roads through mountains and valleys in Austria) in good weather conditions, a test consumption of 17.2 kWh / 100 km was achieved with the ID.5 PRO. This means that about 450 km can be covered on a full battery (theoretical distance according to WLTP: 516 km).
The ID.5 GTX is equipped with two electric motors (four-wheel drive) and is not only more powerful, but also more powerful. The response to the power pedal is fiercer and in the end the GTX bites better too. Even without constantly asking for the best, the GTX offers more driving pleasure.
The pleasure of driving does consume more energy, which is 18 kWh / 100 km on the same route as the ID.5 PRO. Thanks to software version 3.0, the navigation system can now automatically plan charging stops on the route. In addition, the car assigns a unique serial number to the charging point, which makes it possible to pay based on this serial number and a charging card is no longer required.
What else does the Volkswagen ID.5 offer besides the ID.4 besides a flowing roofline? There isn’t anything! Both cars are based on the same foundation, use the same technology, have the same chassis with the same setup, offer the same equipment, and offer the same interior space. The latter is due to the slightly lower rear seats, which compensate for the lower roofline.
So it looks like Volkswagen is making it easy. However, there are already many differences to be made with the various fixtures in the seats, colors and finishes. In addition, there is already a standard version and a sporty GTX. Other brands will only offer the sporty variant in the coupé, but Volkswagen has previously opted to offer it in the ID.4 as well. In short: with ID.5 it’s all about looks and since Volkswagen is so good in shape, it can now offer this extra tasty variant too.
