The sporty look of the new BMW 3-Series is enhanced by a clearly structured surface, dynamic lines and large air inlets at the front. Newly designed headlights and kidney grille provide a strong visual impact. The headlights with LED technology are narrower, with clear contours and inverted L-shaped daytime running lights. Revised contours and new double bars give the BMW kidney grille a more powerful look. The glossy black framed air inlets under the kidney grille cool the brakes and add an elegant element to the look.
Adaptive LED headlights are optional. This can be recognized by the blue accents on the lamp housing. The blue light effect under the headlight unit gives a unique front view in the dark. Adaptive LED headlights offer a variety of functions such as cornering lighting and a glare-free matrix high beam function with dynamic control of beam range and width.
At the rear, horizontal stripes give way, narrow headlight units and wide wheel arch edges accentuate the broad, muscular stance on the road. The exhaust tip now has a diameter of 90 or 100 millimeters, depending on the engine variant. In addition, all models are equipped with 17-inch light alloy wheels.
The Series 3 character presents itself with the Model M Sport. This package includes new features such as a honeycomb structure for the BMW kidney grille, special designs for the front and rear bumpers, as well as new 18-inch M light-alloy wheels (wider at the rear). The BMW Performance models, the M340i and M340d, from BMW M GmbH also stand out with a more prominent appearance. It can be recognized by the BMW kidney grille in a mesh design, 18- or 19-inch M light alloy wheels (optional), trapezoidal exhaust tips and glossy black M mirror caps.
The new M Sport Pack Pro in the options list. It is available in addition to the Model M Sport and also for the model from M GmbH. The package includes the extensive M high-gloss Shadow Line equipment and the M Sport braking system with red calipers. The sporty-dynamic character can be further emphasized with the strengthening of BMW M Performance Parts.
The range of body colors has been expanded with Skyscraper Gray metallic and M Brooklyn Gray metallic as part of the Model M Sport. Individual colors Frozen Pure Gray metallic and Frozen Tanzanite Blue metallic have also been added.
The driver-oriented cockpit is given more shape by the Curved Display. The 12.3-inch information display behind the wheel and the 14.9-inch Touch Control Screen combine into a large curved display with a high-resolution display. The number of physical switches has been significantly reduced in favor of touch and talk operations. The transmission switch of the 8-speed Steptronic transmission is also a new design. It is part of the control panel on the center console, which also contains the Start/Stop button, iDrive Controller, Driving Experience Control switch, parking brake, and operation of other vehicle functions.
Automatic air conditioning with 3-zone setting is standard equipment. These functions can be operated via speech or touch on the Touch Control Display. Standard equipment is further expanded with automatically dimming mirrors, ample storage package and Park Distance Control (PDC) with sensors on the front and rear. All models now also have Live Cockpit Plus including Maps navigation.
The 3-Series is available with the TwinPower Turbo engine and versions with electric plug-in Hybrid and 48-volt Mild Hybrid propulsion technology. There are three Plug-in Hybrid versions to choose from for the 3-Series Sedan and four for the 3-Series Touring. Four petrol engines and four diesel engines with four or six cylinders are available for both models. Part of this offering is a four-cylinder engine with an exhaust manifold integrated into the cylinder head, plus an upgraded turbo system to optimize power delivery. There are also two Performance models from BMW M GmbH with very sporty characteristics.
This means the Series 3 is available with power ratings from 110 kW (150 hp) to 275 kW (374 hp) (average fuel consumption of 1.8 – 8.7 l/100 km in the WLTP cycle and average CO2 emissions of 40 – 198 g/km in WLTP cycle). Mild Hybrid technology promises fast throttle response and efficiency on the inline 6 cylinder petrol and four diesel engines. All engines are mated to an 8-speed Steptronic transmission, including the shift paddle behind the wheel. Optionally, there is an 8-speed Steptronic Sport transmission. xDrive is standard on top models. Four-wheel drive is available as an option for the two smaller motorized petrol versions of the 3-Series Sedan (the petrol version on the 3-Series Touring), for the two diesel versions and for the Plug-in Hybrid model.
Comfort and safety have been enhanced through a range of automated driving and parking assistance systems. Standard equipment includes Approach Control Warning with Brake Assist, which detects cyclists and pedestrians in addition to vehicles. Cruise Control with braking function, Speed Limit Display with no overtaking display, Manual Speed Limit Assist and Lane Departure Warning are also standard. Options include Lane Change Warning, BMW Head-Up Display and Driving Assistant Professional with Steering and Lane Control Assistant, Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function, Automatic Speed Limit Assist, route monitoring function and traffic sign recognition. Optional Parking Assistant includes reverse camera and reverse assist. Parking Assistant Plus – with Park View, Panorama View and Remote 3D View functions – and Drive Recorder are also available as options.
The new BMW 8 Operating System for iDrive paves the way to extensive connectivity and fast data processing. Operation is intuitive, with the Curved Screen and Intelligent Personal Assistant capabilities playing an important role. The My BMW App acts as a digital interface between the driver and the car and also plays a role in controlling the high voltage battery charging process in Plug-in Hybrid models. In the 3-Series and 3-Series Touring Sedans, customers can use BMW ID for a personalized user experience and Smartphone Integration with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. At the same time, BMW ConnectedDrive Upgrades provides automatic updates with the latest software. The contents of the upgrades range from new services to enhanced vehicle functions.
